Jacky McGuinness is a budding artist living in the ‘Wild West’ of Cornwall. In 2007 she was struck down with M.E. and was forced to give up her career in the medical profession.

Being put on a strict regime for recovery she cast around (no pun intended!) for things to occupy her during her many hours of bed rest. She began to knit dishcloths as they were small and simple. She became prolific, but there was no market for her product so she became disillusioned and put down her knitting needles.

One day she heard of the plight of a sub-Saharan refugee who had been forced to flee her country in fear of her life. The woman was unable to contact her family for fear they would be tortured or killed. Jacky wondered what she would do in that situation. How could she get word to her loved ones that she was safe? How could she tell them she loved them?

Her humble dishcloths became the obvious vehicle for a message; they lie around unobtrusively wherever there is a sink. Jacky picked up her knitting needles and began to knit dishcloths again, but this time they contained messages in Morse code.

The first exhibition of Jacky’s work was held in 2008 in the Morvah School House Gallery in West Penwith in their small exhibition space “In the Loo”.

Her latest exhibition entitled Cloths of Heaven expands on the concept of incorporating text into knitting. Her work is inspired by the poetry of W.B. Yeats, and this time includes a textural element so the messages may be discerned, not only visually, but also by touch.

Once again Jacky is exhibiting at the Morvah School House Gallery, but this time her work will be in pride of place in the main gallery. The exhibition runs from Saturday 29th September to Friday 12th October 2012 and is accompanied by the paintings and sculpture of fellow artist Michele Cowmeadow.

Jacky continues to explore and expand her approach to communicating through coded textiles and further exhibitions are planned.
